PTFE gaskets: cord, expanded tape, and industrial sheet

Tech-Alp offers a comprehensive range of PTFE gaskets (polytetrafluoroethylene) suitable for the most demanding environments: chemical industry, food processing, pharmaceuticals, water treatment, and thermal engineering. Available as PTFE cord, expanded PTFE tape, and PTFE sheet, our products provide a universal and durable sealing solution.

Why choose PTFE for your gaskets?

PTFE is recognized as one of the highest-performing sealing materials in the industrial market. Here are its essential advantages:

  • Universal chemical resistance — compatible with almost all acids, bases, solvents, and aggressive fluids, with the exception of elemental fluorine and certain molten alkali metals.
  • Wide temperature range — usable from –200 °C to +260 °C continuously, ensuring gasket integrity under extreme conditions.
  • Minimal coefficient of friction — facilitates assembly and prevents sticking (anti-stick) on flanges and sealing surfaces.
  • Food and pharmaceutical compliance — virgin PTFE is approved for food contact (FDA, EU regulation 10/2011).
  • Long service life — resistant to UV, moisture, and biological agents; requires virtually no maintenance.

Our available PTFE gasket formats

Expanded PTFE tape

Expanded PTFE tape (ePTFE) is the most versatile sealing solution for irregular flanges, valves, threaded connections, and damaged sealing surfaces. Its bi-axial expansion provides exceptional compressibility and adaptability to any surface geometry, without residual creep. Available in square or round section rolls, it installs without specific tools.

Typical applications: sealing glass, ceramic, or stainless steel flanges; rapid on-site replacement; preventive maintenance in pressurized circuits.

PTFE cord

PTFE cord (or PTFE braided packing) is used as a sealing gasket in stuffing boxes, faucets, and pumps. Its braided or stranded structure ensures intimate contact with cylindrical surfaces, even under vibration. Resistant to creep, it maintains its clamping pressure over time.

Typical applications: centrifugal pump packing, quarter-turn valve sealing, industrial and sanitary valve stuffing boxes.

PTFE sheet (virgin and expanded)

Available in virgin PTFE or expanded PTFE, the sheet allows for cutting custom gaskets to the exact dimensions of your flanges, collars, and heat exchangers. Expanded PTFE sheet features reduced density for better conformability at low clamping pressures, ideal for fragile assemblies (glass, HDPE).

Typical applications: cutting custom flat gaskets, chemical insulation in transfer lines, substrate for PTFE spiral-wound gaskets.

Selection guide — which format to choose?

Format Max. pressure Main application Assembly
Expanded PTFE tape ≤ 40 bar Flanges, fittings, irregular surfaces Manual, no tools required
PTFE cord ≤ 80 bar Stuffing box, pumps, valves Cut and place into housing
Virgin PTFE sheet ≤ 60 bar Standard flat flange gaskets Cutter / punch tool
Expanded PTFE sheet ≤ 40 bar Fragile flanges, low pressure Cutter / punch tool

Frequently asked questions about PTFE gaskets

What is the difference between virgin PTFE and expanded PTFE?
Virgin PTFE is dense and rigid, ideal for high pressures. Expanded PTFE (ePTFE) is micro-porous, softer, and more compressible, making it particularly suitable for irregular surfaces and low clamping torques.
Can PTFE be used with food-grade fluids?
Yes. Virgin PTFE is an inert material, FDA-approved and compliant with the European regulation EU 10/2011 for direct contact with food products.
How to size expanded PTFE tape for a flange?
Measure the inner perimeter of the flange and add 10% extra length to ensure overlap at the ends. The section of the tape should match the width of the flange sealing surface.
What is the maximum operating temperature of a PTFE gasket?
PTFE withstands continuous temperatures up to 260 °C and peaks of 300 °C for short periods. Below –200 °C, it remains functional, unlike most elastomers.
